Glucosamine and chondroitin are naturally occurring nutrients that are involved in the formation of cartilage in the joints. Cartilage is constantly broken down and rebuilt in the body. These nutrients are essential to ensure that the building process runs smoothly and that breakdown is not excessive.
Most healthy adult dogs produce enough glucosamine and chondroitin in their bodies. However, some dogs require additional supplementation through their diet.
Most Cagatay dog foods contain both nutrients - in foods for large dog breeds, the levels are even increased. Additional supplementation with tablets or powder is usually not harmful, as excess amounts are excreted in the urine. However, this can cause unnecessary costs.
Puppy food can be introduced during the weaning period by softening some kibble with warm water (not milk) and placing it near their sleeping place.
If the puppies do not accept the food immediately, you can put a small amount of the softened food on their front paws. They will instinctively lick it and get used to the smell and taste.
Once they accept the moistened food, a bowl of dry food can be provided in addition and the amount of softened food can be gradually reduced. This encourages the transition to dry food.
Once all puppies are eating the dry food without any problems, the soggy food can be removed completely. It is important that they have access to fresh, clean water at all times.
Some dogs prefer wet food, but dry food is often more convenient and cost-effective. Introducing a dog to dry food should be done gradually. It is best to start by mixing a small amount of dry food into the usual wet food.
Often it is the unusual texture of dry food that makes dogs hesitate at first. If the dog initially refuses it, that is completely normal. One option is to soften the dry food with a little warm water - but never with milk . Milk can add fat, sugar and extra protein, which can upset the nutritional balance of the food.
